WhatsApp scam volume has exploded since 2024 because fraudsters can buy bulk virtual numbers in country codes such as +84 (Vietnam), +60 (Malaysia), +62 (Indonesia), +44 (UK), +1 (US/Canada) and +254 (Kenya) for a few cents each and immediately start messaging Indian, US and European targets. Because WhatsApp uses an internet connection rather than the telecom network, none of the carrier-side spam filters apply, and the only line of defence is recognising the script.
The most common WhatsApp scam in 2025 and 2026 is the “task-based earning” scam: a friendly recruiter offers ₹100 to ₹500 for liking YouTube videos or rating hotels, pays out genuinely for the first day to build trust, then “upgrades” the victim to a higher-paying tier that requires depositing money into a fake investment app. The app shows fake gains until the victim tries to withdraw, at which point recovery fees and tax demands escalate until the victim is bankrupted or in debt.
Red flags
- A first message from an unknown international number that already knows your first name.
- An offer to “work from home”, “rate hotels”, “boost TikTok creators” or “review Amazon products” for guaranteed daily income.
- A profile picture of an attractive professional and a one-line bio claiming to work at JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, Binance or Zerodha.
- Pressure to move the conversation off WhatsApp to Telegram, Signal or a custom “trading platform” app downloaded outside the Play Store.
- A small genuine payment in the first day or two, used to build trust before larger “deposits” are requested.
What to do
- Do not reply, even to say “stop” — a reply confirms the number is active and feeds you into a higher-priority list.
- Use Report in WhatsApp (tap the number > Report contact > Block). Reporting also strips the last five messages for the platform’s abuse team.
- Search the number on PhoneLookup before any payment, share or download — if it is in our database, the script is already documented.
- If money has moved, dial 1930 in India within the golden hour and lodge a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in.
Real-world examples
The Amazon “review job”
A recruiter from Sharma HR offers ₹200 per Amazon product review and pays you ₹200 promptly via UPI. The next day she invites you into a Telegram group where members complete “group tasks” that require depositing ₹1,000 to ₹50,000 to unlock combo orders. Withdrawals are blocked until you complete the next deposit, and the next, and the next.
Pig butchering / crypto romance
A woman or man from Hong Kong, Singapore or Dubai starts a friendly chat that turns flirtatious over a few weeks, then mentions a “reliable trading platform” her uncle uses. The platform is fake. Victims have lost crores in single cases.

Frequently asked questions
Why are most WhatsApp scams from +84 or +62 numbers?
Vietnamese and Indonesian SIMs can still be activated in bulk with minimal KYC, and WhatsApp accepts them as primary numbers. Scam operations in Cambodia, Myanmar and Laos run automated dialers using these SIMs because takedowns there are slow.
Can WhatsApp see my number from a scammer’s chat?
Yes — your number is visible to any account that messages you, even if you have not added them. Use the Privacy settings to restrict your profile photo, about and last seen to Contacts only.
