What this category covers

Loan-related fraud in India splits into two patterns. The first is the unauthorised instant-loan app, which approves a ₹5,000 — ₹50,000 loan within minutes, harvests your entire contact list and gallery during installation, then unleashes harassment and morphed photographs against your family if you miss even a single repayment. The Reserve Bank of India’s Digital Lending Guidelines have shrunk this market, but rebranded variants continue to appear on the Play Store under names that mimic legitimate NBFCs.

The second pattern is the ‘loan advance fee’ call. The fraudster offers a pre-approved ₹5 — 25 lakh loan at a tempting interest rate, then asks for a processing / GST / file-opening fee paid up-front to an individual UPI ID. As soon as the fee is paid, the line goes dead and no loan ever materialises. RBI rules explicitly prohibit upfront fees deducted outside the loan disbursal amount — if a lender asks for one, it is fraud.

Red flags

  • A pre-approved loan from a company you have never applied to.
  • Pressure to pay a processing, GST, insurance, NOC or CIBIL clearance fee to a personal UPI ID or bank account.
  • An instant-loan app outside the Google Play Store or Apple App Store, or one whose Play Store listing has thousands of one-star reviews mentioning blackmail.
  • A loan app that requests access to your contacts, gallery, SMS and call logs at install — RBI rules prohibit this.
  • Recovery callers using abusive language, threatening to post morphed photos to your contacts, or claiming “goondas” will be sent.

What to do

  1. Verify any lender on the RBI list of regulated entities (https://rbi.org.in) before paying anything. If they are not listed, walk away.
  2. Uninstall any predatory loan app and immediately revoke its contacts / gallery / SMS permissions in your phone settings.
  3. File a complaint on the Sachet portal (https://sachet.rbi.org.in) and at cybercrime.gov.in.
  4. Report harassment by recovery agents to your local police, the RBI Ombudsman, and the National Commission for Women if morphed images target a woman in the family.

Real-world examples

₹7 lakh ‘pre-approved’ loan with a ₹7,500 processing fee

Caller from “Bajaj Loan Partner” offers a ₹7 lakh personal loan at 8.2% and asks for a ₹7,500 processing fee paid to an individual’s UPI ID. After payment, fresh fees for ‘file activation’, ‘GST’ and ‘NOC’ are demanded until the victim refuses, at which point the number goes silent.

Predatory app harassment

Victim downloads a ₹6,000 instant loan from an unregistered app; after one missed installment, the recovery team WhatsApps morphed obscene photos of the victim to every contact in the phone book, demanding 5x the original amount.

Frequently asked questions

Are all instant-loan apps fraudulent?

No. Apps from registered NBFCs and banks (e.g. Bajaj, KreditBee, MoneyTap, Flipkart Pay Later, Amazon Pay Later) follow RBI guidelines. Risk lives in apps outside the Play Store, apps with new publisher accounts, and apps asking for contacts/gallery access at install.

How do I report harassment by recovery agents?

RBI rules cap recovery contact between 8 AM and 7 PM on registered phone numbers. Record the call, file with the lender’s nodal officer, escalate to RBI Ombudsman if unresolved in 30 days, and file an FIR for criminal intimidation.
